Scale model of the brew house of the Heineken brewery in Amsterdam
In the mash copper the mash is made of malt and water. One third of this is pumped to the brewing copper where it is heated (maischen). This is pumped back to the mash copper and then to the lauter tun. The solid substances are filtered and wort is produced. Finally the wort is cooked in the wort copper and hops are added. Then the wort is pumped out of the brew house to the fermentation cellar where through fermentation alcohol and carbonic acid is created and the real beer is produced. Each copper in the Heineken brew house in Amsterdam could contain 40.000 liters of fluids. The brew house was built in 1911-1913.
