Refractometer
A refractometer is an instrument that measures the refractive index of a liquid and calculates the density of that liquid. In this way, the presence and content of each substance in the liquid in question can be determined. During beer brewing, the amount of sugar in the wort used to be measured with the refractometer. Wort is the sugary liquid obtained from the processing and boiling of grains for brewing beer. The sugars in the wort are converted into alcohol and carbon dioxide by fermentation: the bubbles in the beer. Thus, based on the sugar content in the wort, it can be calculated how high the alcohol content in the beer will be after fermentation. Nowadays, the sugar content is measured with a digital instrument in the brewery.
